Pride and prejudice

Article Abstract:

Deckel AG chmn Leif Lundkvist has gained acceptance as the only foreign CEO in the German machine tool industry. The Norwegian-born, US-educated Lundkvist assumed his position in 1984, and brought an international marketing perspective to a firm which had a long engineering tradition but a slow response to strong Japanese competition. Deckel today is Germany's biggest machine tool producer and has a productivity level far beyond the industry average. Approaches to confronting Japanese competition have included assumption of a focus on specialized machinery; selling fewer units of each kind of machine but at a higher price and profit margin per unit; and acceleration of transition from conventional to electronic machine tools.

Why 'all is flux' at Nokia

Article Abstract:

Nokia Oy Chairman Kari Kairamo has helped the Finnish company increase investment in research and development and acquire a variety of new high-volume electronic properties through acquisitions, mergers, and divestitures. Takeover activity in the previous year and a half has added more than 50% to 1987 consolidated group sales of $3.1 billion. The company is the global market leader with its Mobira mobile telephones division. Nokia's strategy of divestiture and takeovers has made the investment community nervous, causing Nokia's stocks to perform 50% below average in 1988, so the company is now attempting to communicate the soundness of its investment strategies.
