Private companies keep their deal appeal

Article Abstract:

The UK saw a record number of public-to-private deals, in which a venture capitalist or private company bids for a publicly-quoted company, in 1998. It is likely that the number of such deals will continue to rise in 1999. There were 1,298 private company sales in 1998, from 1,475 in 1997. Private company shareholders considering an exit in 1999 may wish to act quickly, before investors begin delaying acquisition decisions because of uncertainty about year 2000 compliance issues.

Getting the best out of growing companies

Article Abstract:

UK accountancy firms are increasingly acting as advisors to growing companies in preference to investment bank advisors. Accountancy firm KPMG dealt with 236 transactions in 1997, worth 2.9 billion pounds sterling, compared with 55 transactions in 1992, worth 711 million pounds sterling. Accountancy firms offer greater control to the seller with regard to price and purchase, while advice is usually more appropriate to the entrepreneurial spirit of growing businesses.

Volatility the enemy of volume

Article Abstract:

A fall in the UK Private Company Price Index from 12.4 in the second quarter of 1998 to 11.0 in the third quarter of 1998 is blamed on the unstable global markets, lead by the currency collapse of the Far East and recession in Russia. The mergers and acquisitions market is suffering from a lack of confidence in 1998, which is unlikely to be regained during 1999. The situation is not helped by predictions of further recession in the UK.
