Article Abstract:

The British medical profession has tended to be regulated by physicians, but a Commission for Health Improvement will take on the role of an independent inspector from April 3 2000. Annual appraisals are planned for physicians, and revalidation is needed for physicians to stay on the register. Britain has low survival rates for heart disease and cancers. The General Medical Council has tended to focus on ethics rather than clinical practice. Appraisal could lead to more buraucracy and physicians could leave if they are subject to too much pressure.

Fatalism

Article Abstract:

There is concern about the quality of care for cancer patients in the United Kingdom. Some hospitals are good, but there is a lack of coordination, and the type of treatment that patients receive depends partly on luck. There is also a low level of spending on drugs to treat cancer, and a lack of qualified oncologists, and survival rates for certain types of cancer are lower than in the US. Many physicians argue that change is only likely to occur as a result of protests by the general public.

Private lives

Article Abstract:

The British National Health Service (NHS) has well-publicized problems, yet this has not created a strong demand for private health insurance, which accounted for 11.5% of Britons in 1998, a rise of 1.8% in the 1990s. Elective treatments that patients pay for account for some 13% of the total, a figure that has also changed little. Tax relief for older people with private medical insurance has been abolished. There is still faith in the NHS, despite its problems, especially for serious illnesses.
