Privatisation of public open space: the Los Angeles experience

Article Abstract:

A study of three urban plazas in Los Angeles, CA, is used to illustrate the phenomenon of public space privatisation that has become a common feature in downtown areas of US cities. Case studies of the Security Pacific, Noguchi and Citicorp plazas, all of which were built using private capital, show that the public has far less freedom of access to urban plazas than to traditional public open spaces. The inward-looking design of the plazas is designed to attract specific types of people, mainly office workers taking a lunch break, and to discourage others, such as children and the homeless.

Planning, housing and the community in a new socialist town: the case of Tychy, Poland

Article Abstract:

Research carried out in Tychy, Poland between 1985 and 1990, found a town which lacked a centre, and which had little variation in its architecture, a result of socialist planning policies implemented after World War Two. Local people were critical of the way the town had been planned, but were being involved in a new planning initiative designed to bring more life into the town, a process carried out both by the local authorities, and by planning specialists.
