Product review: with Millennium projects in particular getting off the ground, 1997 looks set to be a good year for landscape architects. Some manufacturers already have full order books, and many new products are being introduced

Article Abstract:

There was an increased in commissions for landscape architects in 1996 and many Millennium projects will get underway in 1997. There is an abundance of new landscape products and a survey commissioned by Interpave, the Precast Concrete Paving and Kerb Association, block paving is the favoured type of paving. There are new steel seating products on the market and a wide variety of planters in durable and interesting finishes. There is increased interest in lighting design, and concern over light pollution of the night sky as led to an acknowledgement of the benefits of subtle ambient lighting.

Article Abstract:

To meet the demand for innovative ideas the UK building and landscape industries are sourcing new products from overseas and using new materials to make traditional products. Designers are using lighting, furniture, horticulture and paving stones to create new urban landscapes in city centres. New products are advertised on the Internet. Timber decking has become very popular for use in domestic gardens. Whilst paving stone manufacturers are constantly looking for new materials which are easy to lay yet economical.

An increasing number of landscape architecture projects focus on sustainable design. Renewable and environmentally-friendly material products are in growing demand to suit changing development needs. Materials company Roof Systems's coloured surface product Road Carpet can be used instead of tarmac on roads, for example. Artistic designs such as modern sculptures are more and more popular in public projects.
