Profile: Barbara Stephenson, Norton Rose

Article Abstract:

Barbara Stephenson heads the corporate finance department of the Norton Rose law firm. She became a partner in 1989 having worked for Norton Rose since 1983. Stephenson enjoys the excitement of corporate finance and the fact that she has come to know her clients well during her years with Norton Rose, and she is interested in the increasing amount of cross-border work. Stephenson has divided her department of 28 partners and almost 100 other lawyers into six teams with a mix of experience and interests, and is keen to ensure that younger employees get a wide range of experience before specializing.

Diageo helps four firms climb the tables

Article Abstract:

The 9.8 billion pound sterling merger of Grand Metropolitan and Guinness, forming Diageo, enabled the four advising legal firms to reach top positions in the 1997 table of legal advisers. Slaughter and May completed 32 public sector deals in 1997, at a value of 19,571 million pounds sterling. Allen & Overy dealt with 12 public sector transactions, worth 12,195 million pounds sterling. The other two firms who worked on the Diageo deal were Linklaters & Paines and Freshfields.

Slaughter and May reigns supreme

Article Abstract:

Slaughter and May continues to lead the 'Acquisitions Monthly' league table of legal advisers involved with UK public takeovers. During 1994, the company handled 16 deals representing a total value of 4.1 billion pounds sterling, including the Granada acquisition of LWT, and the Westland Group purchase of GKN. Details of Slaughter and May's performance during 1994 is given, along with various league tables.
