Punish and be damned

Article Abstract:

Terrorist attacks lead to a sense of outrage, and public outrage is one effective weapon against terrorism, depriving terrorists of sanctuary. The US is a particular terrorist target and may have to take action against terrorists. The US attack on camps in Afghanistan may be deserved, but may not be wise if it creates more fanatics. The US attack on a factory in Sudan is more dubious, with no information given to back US beliefs that the plant was involved in producing materials for nerve gases. US intelligence may not always be correct, and terrible mistakes can be made by the US armed forces.

Today's new cult hero

Article Abstract:

Osama bin Laden, seen as a terrorist mastermind by the US government, and increasingly as a cult hero in Saudi Arabia, is a millionaire in exile from that country. There has been criticism of the US attack on camps in Afghanistan claimed to be terrorist facilities. There is also criticism of the US attack on a pharmaceuticals plant in Sudan. Bin Laden's family built up wealth in the construction industry. He opposes US forces in Arabian countries and has threatened attacks on US citizens living in Saudi Arabia if US troops are not withdrawn from that country.

After the bomb

Article Abstract:

The bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, has led to a new view of the US. The US has been criticised due to marines not permitting rescuers to enter the compound of the embassy to try to save victims in a nearby building, and for focusing on US victims to the exclusion of others. Kenyans responded rapidly to the crisis, with businessmen, drivers and others helping in the rescue, and many people making blood donations. The political opposition and president collaborated in a show of unity similar to that which secured Kenyan indepdence.
