Putting a lid on speculation

Article Abstract:

The Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong has adopted sales policies that will correct high real state prices and ensure that property ends up in the hands of genuine buyers. The new policies will help curb speculation which accounted for a 20% price increase in 1996. The new policies prohibit the sale or transfer of property before completion and companies buying real property will be limited to the last 15% of any batch of apartments on sale.

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe that property developers in Thailand will benefit from the government's actions to revive property demand, but stock prices are still expected to face pressure from increased recapitalization needs. Among the measures taken by the government are tax exemptions for home buyers and an increased allowance for property depreciation from 5%/year over a 20-year period to 24% in the first year and 4% for the next 19 years.
