RAF Tornado F.3 flies with AMRAAM

Article Abstract:

The first Tornado F.3 interceptor of the Royal Air Force (RAF) equipped with the Raytheon AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) has made its maiden flight from the British Aerospace (BAe) Warton facility. An official says the test went smoothly with the good handling capabilities of the aircraft not influenced by the new missiles. The inclusion of the AMRAAM is within the RAF's $210-million Capability Sustainment Program (CSP) for the Tornado F.3 being performed at RAF St. Athan. The aircraft is being provided the capability to be fitted with the Matra BAe Dynamics Advanced Short-Range Air-to-Air Missile (ASRAAM).

Four options on the table for South African Impala trainer replacement

Article Abstract:

The South African Air Force (SAAF) is evaluating four jet fighter trainer aircraft as potential replacements for its Impala aircraft that it wants to phased out of service. The four jet fighter trainer aircraft, which were picked out of proposals submitted by 19 countries, include the Italian Aeromacchi MB339, Czech-built L159, the British Aerospace Hawk NG and the Italian-Russian Yak AEM. Makers of the four aircraft are expected to submit final specifications of their products by mid-June 1998 so that SAAF could decide immediately which of the four will replace its Impala aircraft.

Re-engining Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft

Article Abstract:

The US Air Force plans to re-engine its fleet of RC-135 Rivet Joint reconnaissance planes in a move that is expected to generate life-cycle-cost savings of $1.5 billion. The US Air Force seeks to have its whole RC-135 Rivet Joint fleet undergo by fiscal year 2002 an engine conversion. The re-engining program for the RC-135 Rivet Joint involves the replacement of the aircraft's present Pratt & Whitney TF33s with F108 turbofans. The engine-conversion plan is expected to lessen operating expenditures and increase the range of the RC-135 Rivet Joint.
