Article Abstract:

The All India Granites and Stone Association estimates that exports of granite was valued at Rs1,048 crore in 1997-98 against Rs1,065 crore in 1996-97. Finished products account for 62 percent of the total granite exports while rough granite stones account for 32 percent. India exports mainly to the US, Japan, Germany and Italy. The global recession in the construction industry has adversely affected granite exports from the country. The lack of a comprehensive national policy on granite has also affected the industry. GUJARAT MINERAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: DESERVING A SECOND LOOK

Article Abstract:

The Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation mines lignite, base metals and bauxite, fluorspar, granite and marble. The Government of Gujarat divested 26 percent of its shares in the company, worth Rs31.80 crore, at Rs130 each. The Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation recorded sales of Rs262.79 crore against the projected Rs258.42 crore in 1997-98. It made a net profit of Rs85.70 crore against the projected Rs96.31 crore. It recorded sales of Rs106.23 crore and a net profit of Rs37.12 crore in the 6 months ended September 1998. (rk) (kvr)

Zass Exports Pvt Ltd of Bangalore has increased its exports of rough granite blocks to Europe from 6 percent of annual export turnover in 1995-96 to over 80 percent at present. It has been able to do this by directly reaching actual users and ensuring top quality and timely deliveries. It has recently acquired an ailing export oriented granite factory, which will enable it to provide value addition by exporting finished granite products according to customer specifications. (khr)
