Rabin and his rabbis: Israel

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Meretz Party is locked in a power struggle with the conservative Shas Party in the Israeli parliament. The Shas are orthodox Sephardic jews who want Judaic law imposed over Israel. The Meretz have greater numbers, but the Shas has influence on Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

Article Abstract:

Orthodox Jews in Tel Aviv are protesting for legal changes in how Supreme Court judges are appointed. They argue that the current Court is too liberal and secular. As part of the Likud coalition, Orthodox Jews are pushing for a law that recognizes only Orthodox conversions to Judaism.
