Raising awareness of risk

Article Abstract:

Good management encompasses both quality assurance and risk management which are related but significantly different. The Wren Insurance Association has produced 'The Risk Management Guidelines' which uses the quality assurance standard, BS 5750 as its starting point but takes a different perspective. Risk management, unlike quality assurance, is subjective, concerned with daily practice and driven by the need to avoid making neglegent errors. It is particularly important when negotiating contracts with clients and when the architect does not undertake the whole design.

Making professional futures: architects are at a turning point, but without a sense of role or direction. Continuous learning may put them on course

Article Abstract:

Architects are often uncertain about whether they should be primarily concerned with the wider interests of society and the user, or with the specific interest of their developer clients, or the success of their practice. Architects and other professionals need to respect other skills, accept new ways of delivery and roles, learn contextual skills and balance traditional professional concern for society and the user with the need to use resources effectively to the benefit of the business.
