Rates of pay

Article Abstract:

Performance has replaced seniority as the basis for determining employee pay in a growing number of companies. Implementing performance appraisal systems can be difficult even for experienced appraisers because the process can be influenced by any number of factors, including the expertise of the appraiser and the profitability of the organization. For performance appraisals to succeed, the appraiser and the subordina te must be in agreement as to what the latter should accomplish even before the appraisal process begins. During the appraisal interview, subordinates are informed regarding their performance in meeting company goals. The interview ends with the appraiser and the subordinate establishing new goals and determining the subordinate's need for training or promotion. Appraisers must keep in mind that they are dealing with individuals who cannot be treated in the same manner.

New angle on 360-degree feedback

Article Abstract:

It is now starting to be recognized that 360-degree feedback is not effective as a way of improving managerial performance unless it is used correctly. In particular, 360-degree feedback does not work in companies which have traditionally discouraged consultation or dialogue among staff. Some observers believe that 360-degree feedback should be one element of a wider strategy for managerial appraisal.
