Reaching out

Article Abstract:

The Chinese province of Yunnan is an important force in the economies of nearby Burma and Thailand. The Chinese originally saw the potential of the Burmese market for goods from Yunnan and Sichuan in the 1980s. China is determined to continue the trade links, despite Burmese imports weakening in favour other sources, and Burma's 1997 admission to membership of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Yunnan citizens are also emigrating illegally to Burma. One of the Yunnanese links with Laos is Yunnan Airlines 1996 purchase of a 60% stake in Laos national airline Lao Aviation.

Let's talk: freed democracy activist stresses reconciliation

Article Abstract:

Aung San Suu Kyi asked for a dialogue with Burma's dictatorship upon her July 10, 1995, release after six years of house arrest, adding the alternative was destruction for the country. The govt may instead invite her to join the meaningless National Convention, now drafting a new constitution that seems aimed at keeping her out of power and solidifying the military's grip. Her ability to resume political activities remains uncertain, but will be limited by laws such as the one barring meetings of five or more people.

Arrested development: is the opposition doomed to irrelevance?

Article Abstract:

Burma's ruling junta of generals seems to have returned to hardline control of political life following a show of support from Chinese leaders. Aung San Suu Kyi, frequently seen as an Asian version of Nelson Mandela, seems increasingly irrelevant as Burma's economy opens up again and the Asean group of nations mends fences, eager to prevent China from gaining further influence. Burma's democracy movement is beset by infighting and exists largely in exile. Turmoil in nearby Cambodia is a further complication.
