Article Abstract:

The Chinese government plans to print a Hong Kong edition of its English-language newspaper, the China Daily. The decision reflects an effort by China to reach the upper level of business and civil-service leaders in Hong Kong who read English-language newspapers. Sources report that China's State Council, the cabinet, is leading efforts to launch the local edition of the China Daily in Hong Kong. One journalism professor observed that China's motivation comes from concern that without this edition, English-language readers will be exposed to non-official coverage of different media issues.

Lost decades

Article Abstract:

Chinese publications are set to become more popular in Cambodia as the children who are now being educated in the country's reopened Chinese schools grow up, according to Eang Sovan, editor of The Commercial News, Cambodia's only Chinese newspaper. The newspaper, founded in 1993, now sells just over 3,000 copies. It cost $150,000 to start up, and is only just beginning to be profitable. It sees itself as a Chinese Cambodia newspaper, and does not feel obliged to remain loyal to China.

Apple in a stew

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily has come into conflict with the Chinese administration over an article that claimed that the wife of Chinese Vice-Premier Jiang Chunyun had been executed earlier in 1997 after having been convicted of drug smuggling. Chinese propaganda officials have denied the report, and most observers believe that it comes from an unreliable source. This incident has been exploited to maximum advantage by Oriental Daily News, Apple Daily's main rival.
