Article Abstract:

Indonesia's Chinese community, which is small but powerful, has come under strong pressure as a result of the country's economic difficulties. The wealthiest Chinese business owners in Indonesia have for many years held some of their assets outside the country, but the latest economic problems are prompting even middle class Chinese to consider leaving Indonesia. For them, leaving Indonesia will be an irreversible decision, as they will have to sell everything in order to be able to afford to re-establish themselves in another country.

Try next door: in neighboring countries, vastly different New Years

Article Abstract:

The blatant differences between how Chinese New Year is celebrated in Indonesia and in neighboring Malaysia arise from different histories and demographics. In Indonesia the Chinese, though only 2% of the population, still dominate the economy. The different natures of communist insurgencies in the two countries also contribute.

Thailand is the worst affected, with total vehicle sales down 73% in September. Manufacturers are cutting their domestic sales projections, and in the Philippines, there is the beginning of a slowdown, with sales down in September. Malaysia's recent duty increase in imported car parts will have an impact.
