Ready, steady, euro

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom is not likely to join European monetary union before 2002 following an announceent that the UK would not join in 1999. This delay allows British companies more time to consider Emu strategically and phase costs in. The new European currency, or euro, is likely to have an impact on the UK before 2002 since it will be used in dealings with some European companies after 1999. This means that companies have to act fast to prepare themselves and need to consider issues such as staff retraining and accounting systems.

Euro-bashers beware

Article Abstract:

Geoffrey Martin is the United Kingdom representative in the European Commission, and he is critical of the way that European issues are dealt with in the media. He sees stories which misrepresent the European Union as likely to create fear and mistrust, which could especially affect small businesses. He is seeking to improve and integrate UK data networks to permit small businesses to gain information on Europe more easily. He argues that it is in the UK's interests to join European monetary union.
