Realising the autonomous house

Article Abstract:

Architects Brenda and Robert Vale have designed and built a house for their own use in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, which expresses their views about the relationship between buildings and the environment. It is an 'autonomous' house, being completely independent of mains services. It is a simple construction, with a steeply pitched, clay-tiled roof and the bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor. It is designed to rely onnly on the resources of the land it occupies, and its high level of insulation eliminates the need for a heating system.

A celebration of domestic life

Article Abstract:

Architects Alison and Peter Smithson designed the Sugden House in Watford, England, with the intention of bringing together technical construction possibilities of the time and requirements of an ordinary domestic life. The house was competed in 1957, and its occupation for forty years by the Sugden family validates the architectural concepts. The Sugdens have made some changes, including screening the galleried bedroom that overlooked the staircase, but the house proves the effectiveness of designing to real life requirements.

The challenge of rescuing a romantic Welsh ruin

Article Abstract:

Ruperra Castle in Wales is a ruined seventeenth century Jacobean country house which risks absolute destruction if it is not restored soon, say representatives of the Ruperra Castle Conservation Trust society. The society plans to gather enough funding for the castle's renovation. It was built in 1626 and has a mottled history. Major renovation work in 1785 changed the gabled roofs for battlemented parapet. It was disowned in the 1930s and has been decaying ever since.
