Boris Yeltsin's economic reforms have resulted in some success and many harsh failures. Liberalized markets are supplying more goods, and the ruble has become a genuine currency. However, inflation is rampant at 2,000% and the budget deficit has increased tenfold.

Article Abstract:
Inter-republic trade in the Commonwealth of Independent States must be preserved, but it will collapse if it is based on hard currency the states do not have. In the likelihood of separate currencies, a payments union is suggested as a transitional measure.
