Recession or not?: The latest workload survey gives a mixed picture, with opinion divided over whether a downturn is on the way or not

Article Abstract:

The Workload Survey for third quarter 1998 shows that workloads for architect's offices continued strong growth, although there was a slowdown in new commissions in southern England. The Midlands, Wales, Ulster and Scotland were the best performing areas. Just over half the architects expected conditions to stay stable, with 26% expecting a fall in workloads. There are contrasts between new-build and refurbishment in terms of the type of contract adopted. Design and build is the dominant contract form in industrial building, but its share of the leisure market is insignificant.

HOK already has a London office, and is aiming to move into the European Community, especially the former East Germany. It will benefit from the growing interest of US clients in Europe, and will use a system of changing staff and resources between its offices for each individual project.
