Strangers in the house

Article Abstract:

The need to expand and the lack of competent relatives have forced several family-run Asian firms to contract foreign professional managers that are skilled in Western business practices. Professional managers, however, are often treated as outsiders and not told important company secrets. Furthermore, some family-controlled businesses find it hard to replace their traditional ways and display reluctance in applying Western approaches.

Keeping star Chinese managers loyal

Article Abstract:

Foreign-owned companies in China are increasingly offering their top level Chinese employees help in purchasing housing, a commodity most Chinese can not afford due to high prices and unavailability of mortgage loans. The benefit is aimed at keeping employees them from being pirated. Chinese employees, who also enjoy high pay raises, are considered to be less costly to hire and retain than expatriates.
