Recreating the civic: Leeds has ambitions to remodel itself as a vibrant city for the next century. To date, the architecture is lagging behind

Article Abstract:

Leeds is aiming to become the capital of the North and already has a thriving service economy and it has a strong identity. Substantial parts of the Georgian townscape have survived and there are green suburbs and real open countryside within the city boundaries. However the development of the cultural fringe area has been inhibited due to high capital values and the destruction of the city fringe for road schemes. There is a feeling that the look of the city is already defined by historic buildings, and there is no incentive for new architecture.
