Red alert

Article Abstract:

China is moving into a period of sluggish economic growth and this means that unemployment could rise. Large numbers of new workers are coming into the labor market annually, and jobs are being shed in traditional manufacturing industry. Official figures for economic growth are unreliable and tend to exaggerate growth. The Chinese political leadership would become vulnerable if economic growth slows for a long period. Chinese state enterprises have large debts and are destroying wealth so should be shut down. A banking crisis is more likely if the Chinese economy slows down.

Will China be next?

Article Abstract:

There is a danger that China could suffer an economic collapse which would affect both the rest of Asia and the world economy as a whole. Urban Chinese have benefited from greater wealth and freedom. There was a need for economi reform from 1997 and this involves unemployment and privatization. Reform has been postponed, and the government feels under threat if economic growth rates slow. The economy is unlikely to grow by the 8% target and economic problems such as lower exports are emerging. There is a danger that slower growth could lead to more nationalistic policies.

The titan stirs

Article Abstract:

The 1978 economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping are bearing fruit, as China's annual gross national product (GNP) has experienced near double-digit growth rates since rigid central planning was liberalized. The average Chinese standard of living has likewise improved since 1978.
