Reforming Ulster's police

Article Abstract:

There is a need for reform of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), the police force in Northern Ireland, and this should include a change to the RUC's name. The existing name has connotations that make it British, and changing the name would make the police force appear to embrace the whole community in Northern Ireland. Chris Patten has headed a commision that has set out proposals for reforms and they represent an ideal, though it is important to time the reforms well and make them part of the wider peace process.

Northern Ireland's police

Article Abstract:

There is a need for reform of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), Northern Ireland, following the murder of lawyer, Rosemary Nelson. Nelson defended republicans and nationalists and had complained of assaults and death threats from the RUC. Protestants account for 93% of RUC officers, and Catholics joining the RUC have been killed by the Irish Republican Army. The RUC could be reformed by an outsider, and training and efforts to bring in Catholics may not be sufficient.
