Region's turmoil caught many telecom firms off-guard

Article Abstract:

Asia's telecommunications industry requires restructuring as the region's troubles have pummelled the sector, with funding diminishing and demand decreasing. Observers deem that a shake-out will be the next occurence, with more competitive companies devouring the weaker ones. The elimination of weaker businesses would aid in undoing the oversupply of licenses issued by governments in recent years that resulted in countries with so many telecoms firms.

Telekom shares hit bottom

Article Abstract:

Shares of Telekom Malaysia suffered a 7.2% decline during the first week of Aug 1997, which caused a 7% decrease in overall share prices on the Malaysia stock market in the next week. Telekom Malaysia shares fell following its announcement of a weak 5.7% increase in net profit. According to analysts, the price of Telekom's stock may not drop much further, but the Malaysian stock market should not depend on Telekom for a future rise in overall value.
