A combinatorial approach to the classification problem

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the two-group classification problem on classifying an observation based on its attributes into one of two groups. An efficient algorithm for constructing a linear discriminant function that minimizes the number of misclassified observations from the training sample is presented. Results provide evidence confirming the efficiency of the method.

The single-item newsboy problem with dual performance measures and quantity discounts

Article Abstract:

Prototypes for the single-item newsboy problem with quantity discounts and dual performance measures are developed. Dual performance aims to ascertain an optimal order quantity so that the foreseen profit is optimized. A closed form solution determined the best amount to order in zero shortage cost models while numerical computing worked best for positive shortage cost models.
