Repression by harassment

Article Abstract:

Cuba has been affected by the loss of markets when the Soviet Union collapsed, and this is a cause of the erosion of control of the Communist party in localities like Pedro Betancur. A human-rights groups has been set up in Pedro Betancur, and members began to donate milk shakes in a local park, until their licenses to be self-employed were withdrawn. There have also been house arrests as part of a crackdown against dissidents in Cuba. Dissidents have been able to leave if they wish, and the opposition has been divided in Cuba.

Cosy old Castro?

Article Abstract:

The trial of four Cuban dissidents confirms the Stalinist nature of the Cuban regime, and undermines the hopes of those who sought free speech in Cuba as the economy becomes more open. Sanctions against Cuba have been ineffective in promoting freedom, and offering investment, trade and dialog to Cuba also appears to be ineffective. Cuba's leader, Fidel Castro, does not appear to wish to change, though his successors may allow some change while protecting the achievements of Castro, which do exist.

Red comedy, and not very comic

Article Abstract:

Cuba has little freedom of speech, though stand-up comedians operating in small locations are not strictly controlled by the government. Restrictions have affected the freedom of Cubans to work on a self-employed basis, and this have have encouraged clandestine work. The number of political prisoners has dropped, but this may be because stays in prison are shorter. Independent journalists have also been arrested, as have those who have protested over the jailing of activists.
