Responsibilities and rights

Article Abstract:

Malaysian Prime Minster, Mahathir Mohamad, has suggested that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights should be reviewed because many of the members of the UN were not in existence when the declaration was written. The general consensus of opinion was that the document focuses too much on human rights and not on human responsibilities. A group of former international heads of state, known as the Interaction Council, has got together to write a Universal Declaration of Human Responsibilities and it is hoped that the UN will accept it in 1998.

Hong Kong: jury is still out

Article Abstract:

Political developments in Hong Kong since it became a Special Administrative Region of China in Jul 1997 have generally been more positive than had been widely anticipated. Nobody has been denied the right to set up an organization or make a protest, and Hong Kong people generally have a higher opinion of China than they did in the past. This positive atmosphere has made it possible to delay enacting anti-subversion laws. If this situation persists, then these laws could be much less restrictive than feared.
