Trade in the here Afta

Article Abstract:

Malaysia is positioning itself early as a player in the ASEAN Free Trade Area (Afta). It had already identified 3,700 products for tariff reduction, leaving only a few protected industries such as plastics, and that only for a limited period. The moves are meant as a signal to the ASEAN that Malaysia is ready to meet the terms of the Afta as soon as possible. The Afta, a reworking of Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad's heavily criticized East Asia Economic Group, faces bright prospects in the context of the poor implementation of the GATT.

Resuscitating Asia

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed about possible solutions to Asia's economic difficulties. However, it is unlikely that real recovery will take place unless Asian countries are prepared to construct a new, fairer economic order within which the growing number of disaffected people in the region can face the future more optimistically. Domestic banks across the region will have to recapitalize, but this will be a slow process because of the burden of nonrecoverable loans. Care must be taken to ensure that entrenched interests do not stand in the way of change.

Credibility gap: Union issue mars image as Third World leader

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's position on the formation of national unions has been criticized by other Third World countries. Workers in the electronics industry in the country have seen their efforts to organize continuously thwarted by government indifference. Critics have cited International Labor Organization rules which Malaysia, a signatory to the body, allegedly sidesteps. Malaysia fears that the approval of a national union would discourage foreign investment which it needs so badly.
