Retail decline and the opportunities for commercial revitalisation of small shopping centres

Article Abstract:

Local and remote shopping areas have declined in recent years due to extensive development of the retail industry which has resulted in the availability of large and multipurpose shopping complexes. Superstores and malls are commonplace in large residential areas of the United Kingdom, but their introduction has adversely affected small and often individual shops, who have experienced a significant reduction in custom. Regeneration of these retail outlets will only be achieved with public intervention.

Vehicle crime in the city centre: planning for secure parking

Article Abstract:

A study of police records from 1993, relating to car parks in the UK city centres of Cardiff and Swansea, revealed information about the distribution of vehicle crime. The study showed that large open-air car parks, which are usually outside the main retail area, are most vulnerable to vehicle crime. Vehicle theft from multi-storey car parks was low, but multi-storey car parks without closed-circuit television had a higher rate of criminal damage and thefts from vehicles. The research also examined spatial and temporal distribution of crime, and considered general policy implications.
