Retailer response to environmental and competitive changes in the United States

Article Abstract:

US retailers have had to adopt new strategies to meet the challenges of a changing marketplace and growing competition. In the past, traditional retailers have fended off competition by advertising, engaging in price wars, opening new outlets and widening their product range. However, these strategies no longer work, due to factors including the growth in superchains and superstores; the fact that the marketplace is no longer dominated by shopping malls and their anchor stores; and the increased concentration within the retail sector.

Breathing new life into an old name

Article Abstract:

Dunn and Co is a UK retailer of men's apparel which was sold through a buy-in involving Anthony Philips and Jim Bellingham. The buy-in team evaluated the business over a three month period and examined each store. New opportunities have been identified and 11 stores have been opened since the deal was completed in 1994. There are fewer opportunities for reasonably priced good locations due to an improvement in the UK retail sector, but Dunn and Co should benefit from favorable demographic trends in the UK.
