Watering the roots

Article Abstract:

Thailand's economic boom centers largely on Bangkok and the Eastern Seaboard, while poverty is the rule elsewhere. Savit Bhotivihok is in charge of the government's decentralization plan to relieve pressure in the capitol and raise living standards elsewhere. He hopes to convince industries to locate farther away from ports, which will require developing roads and rail links. The plan has different goals and target industries for Thailand's various regions.

Road to nowhere: Thais and investors continue to haggle over highway

Article Abstract:

A conflict between Bangkok Expressway Co Ltd (BECL) and the Thai government has delayed the opening of a 20-km expressway. BECL refuses to open the road until several issues are settled, including toll rates, revenue sharing between the company and the government and the fate of a 12-km stretch yet to be built. The dispute has foreign investors worried about the safety of other projects and hurt the credibility of revenue-sharing proposals.
