Riot and recrimination

Article Abstract:

India's ruling Congress government's dismissal of four Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) headed state governments after the destruction of the Ayodhya mosque has led to a political crisis. PM P.V. Narasimha Rao dismissed the Hindu-nationalist BJP state governments because of breakdown of law and order in the states. The BJP, however, claims states under Congress rule are not better run. The Congress government is likely to face difficulties in winning the masses' support and attracting foreign investors who are looking for political stability.

The power of memory

Article Abstract:

Sonia Gandhi remains a potent force in Indian politics despite her apparent unwillingness to enter the fray directly. Her chief interests center on her children and keeping control of events surrounding the investigation into the arms deal that brought down the govt of her husband, the late Rajiv Gandhi. As a likely kingmaker and potential queen, Sonia is often invoked by Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao's opponents even as he courts her favor for himself. A faster investigation of the arms scandal is sometimes threatened.

The toll of terror

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of systematic human rights violations has been reported in Kahmir and in other strife-torn Indian states. Latest reports by Amnesty International list 415 documented cases of human rights violations in a six-year period. Although legal foundations for the protection of human rights exist in the country, the rapid growth of paramilitary forces tasked with internal security has compounded rights abuses. Special national security laws empower such forces to detain or kill people on mere suspicion.
