Article Abstract:

Three changes in Taiwanese society stood out during a visit to Taiwan after a 12-year absence. These changes are the proliferation of Western-style buildings and the rising standard of living in the countryside, the increasing stress on Taiwan's distinct culture and the surprising progress toward a fully democratic political system. Although the military and the security agencies have as much interest in resisting democratization now as they did in 1980, Taiwan's new leaders are likely to overcome this danger.
