Robotron fights for its life

Article Abstract:

Robotron Computers (Sommerda, Germany) was created when Friedrich Wokurka, then managing director of the Dresden headquarters of Robotron, the East German computer and electronics manufacturer, split the Robotron 'kombinat', a network of plants, into separate companies. Robotron Computers has entered into a joint venture agreement with Aquarius Systems Inc, a subsidiary of the Taiwanese computer company Wyse Technology Inc set up in the former West Germany in Oct 1990. While the joint venture will create only 90 jobs and entail assembling Taiwanese and US components, Wyse believes that Eastern Europe represents a future market and is establishing a presence there through Robotron. To be successful, Robotron must rationalize operations by reducing its workforce and ridding itself of the peripheral interests it acquired as part of an East German kombinat.

Trapped in the ice

Article Abstract:

Women are severely underrepresented in the management levels of European corporations. An authoritative European Community study conducted in 1987 showed that the proportion of women in middle management ranged from under 4% in Ireland to around 9% in France. Their representation in senior management was even lower, with less than 3% of top management positions being held by women. A key barrier to the advancement of women to management positions is the widespread belief that women cannot function effectively as executives because of child care obligations. Another key obstacle is the unwillingness of many companies to recognize the need to develop training and promotion programs that can help more women advance to management positions.
