Role reversal: London and Beijing prepare to trade places

Article Abstract:

Events in Hong Kong continue to reveal the changing relationship there of China and Britain as the latter prepares to hand over its colony in July 1997. The British continue to insist they will play a role afterwards, but China has repeatedly indicated it will move unilaterally on many issues. A cooperative post-1997 relationship would bode well for British business interests and, London says, for Hong Kong's residents, as well as setting a useful precedent for Beijing. Ultimately, China has the final say.

Tightening the bolts

Article Abstract:

The People's Republic of China (PRC) has made it clear that it intends to strengthen its control over Hong Kong once it takes over the colony from the UK in 1997. The PRC-appointed Preparatory Committee presented the UK with a list of 10 demands which indicate that China plans to change Hong Kong's laws and remove dissenting judges. Included in this list was a demand for the UK to support the PRC's plan to replace Hong Kong's democratically elected Legislative Council.

Here come the jitters

Article Abstract:

China's increasingly aggressive posturing towards its 1997 takeover of Hong Kong has made many members of the colony's business community uncertain about the future. A recent poll indicated that 48% of local and expatriate executives reported having lost confidence in Hong Kong's future. Of paramount concern are worries about unfair competition and financial insecurity that will occur after the colony is handed over to China.
