Beefing up the Lords

Article Abstract:

The British House of Lords has seen the loss of its hereditary peers, and more Labor peers are to be created. The increased legitimacy that the House of Lords has acquired from these changes means that it feels more able to challenge government policy. The leader of the Conservatives in the House of Lords, Lord Strathclyde, plans changes which would give the Lords greater freedom to act against the government, for example in voting against regulations. The government could complete its planned reform of the House of Lords as a remedy against being defeated.

Article Abstract:

The British system of aristocratic titles is confusing, and there have been proposals to change it, linked to reform of the House of Lords. The government plans to remove the right of the hereditary peers to vote in the House of Lords, and Baroness Jay, leader of the House of Lords and a life peer, suggests that life peers should simply use ML after their names, and lose their titles. It would be easier simply to abolish all titles, and if necessary allow those who held titles to use letters after their names as abbreviations of the titles.
