Rough set approach to knowledge-based decision support

Article Abstract:

The rough set concept is a new mathematical approach to imprecision, vagueness and uncertainty. It is based on the assumption that some information is associated with every object of the universe of discourse. Rough set theory refers to machine learning, knowledge discovery, inductive reference and statistics in a sense, since its basic operations are used to show fundamental patterns in data. It is easy to understand, finds minimal sets of data, provides straightforward interpretation of results and generates minimal sets of decision rules from data.

Acquiring expert rules with the aid of decision tables

Article Abstract:

The use of decision tables in knowledge engineering is considered. Specifically, a decision table analyzer is developed to implement a semi-automatic approach to the acquisition of expert system rules. The analyzer, which is applicable to heuristic classification problems, reduces the amount of questions asked of the expert by identifying areas of incompleteness, redundancy and conflict.
