Running for cover: dissident seeks asylum in Australia

Article Abstract:

Dissident and academic George Aditjondro plans to seek asylum in Australia to avoid charges in Indonesia of insulting an unspecified govt body. His move, following intense police questioning, has drawn some criticism as well as support from other critics of the govt, and may cause diplomatic trouble between the two countries. Indonesia is likewise applying greater pressure to other dissidents and critics of the govt and its top officials. Aditjondro is a former lecturer at Satya Wacana Christian U, now on six-month leave.

Joining the fold: first Asean, then more trade ties

Article Abstract:

Vietnam will join ASEAN in July but its hoped-for improved economic links may require more time and effort. The country hopes its involvement in Asean will help it against China as well as improving its stature in the world and making trade ties more accessible. ASEAN has hinted that involvement against China is unlikely but it seems ready to help in other ways. The Asian Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) want more openness from Vietnam than it is yet ready to offer.

Gas pressure

Article Abstract:

Indonesia is the leading producer and exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The country earned more than $4 billion from sales of LNG in 1991. However, the stalled negotiations regarding the revenue sharing agreement on the Natuna gas field between the government and US oil company Esso AG is threatening the future of Indonesia's LNG industry. Esso AG wants a revenue sharing agreement that would enable it to recover its proposed $32 billion investment in the Natuna gas field project.
