'Rushed' decision on final five for Scottish parliament...

Article Abstract:

Judges have chosen a shortlist of five architectural teams for the contract to design the Scottish parliament building in Edinburgh, Scotland. The shortlist comprises three teams with Scottish connections, a Spanish team and an English team. They will prepare exhibitions of their ideas and work to be displayed around the country and judges will choose the winner in Jul 1998. Some architects have said the shortlisted design teams do not have sufficient cultural involvement with the project, whilst others say the decision-making process has been too rushed to produce a good design.

Letting in the daylight on a restricted urban site

Article Abstract:

Architect, Gordon Fleming of Anthony Richardson and Partners has designed a new church hall for the parish os St Alban the Martyr in London, England. The restricted site required innovative natural lighting to achieve an interior bright enough for all the uses of the hall. A single vaulted roof is used with windows in the roof and walls which light all the rooms. The original church is skillfully combined with the new building to give an appropriate sense of spirituality.
