Russia devalued

Article Abstract:

Russia has devalued the ruble, and there is a danger that the ruble could continue to fall, and that banks could face a run by depositors if no additional foreign credit is available. Much lending has been squandered, and has not been used to pay wages or pensions. There are a number of politicians offering solutions to Russia's problems of unpaid wages, pollution and poorly equipped hospitals. These politicians often blame capitalism and are often unfriendly to the West. Foreign aid should only be given to Russian under strict conditions. Foreigners alone cannot solve Russia's problems.

Russia's latest experiment

Article Abstract:

Russia has a new prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov, and Viktor Gerashchenko has been appointed head of the central bank. There is concern that economic reform could be abandoned and there could be a return to central planning. There is also concern that a social convulsion could end the political agreement that has been reached in Russia. A general strike has been called for Oct 7 1998, and the Communists wish to see Boris Yeltsin leave the post of president.
