Dismissal of Alexander Lebed from his position as security advisor poses new possibilities for future configuration of Russian leadership. Boris Yeltsin may make new overtures to the Communists in lieu of his coalition with Lebed, or Lebed may unite with the Communists, shifting the power configuration.

Alexander Lebed continues to be at odds with Russian president Boris Yeltsin, even going as far as to resign his position as national security advisor. Though his resignation was not accepted by Yeltsin, Lebed's power has been reduced in an effort to control his thirst for power.
