SAY IT WITH FLOWERS

Article Abstract:

India exported cut-flowers worth Rs18.08 crore in 1996-97 and Rs20 crore in 1997-98. Exports of cut-flowers are expected to net Rs50 crore by the year 2000. India exports flowers to Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. The floriculture industry in India has stabilised with higher demand in the country, availability of infrastructure facilities like cold storage at airports in Bangalore and Delhi, setting up of auction houses and increase in freight subsidy. Production costs have fallen to less than a rupee for a stem from Rs2 per stem in 1996. The changing lifestyle of the Indians using more flowers has boosted the domestic demand. (rk)
