SEA FOOD EXPORTS IN CHOPPY WATERS AGAIN

Article Abstract:

The quantum of seafood exports, in the first 4 months of 1998-99, was 81,600 tonnes (compared to 87,100 tonnes during the of corresponding period of 1997-98). The value of exports was $528.27 million during the period ($536.92 million same period last year). The exports of seafood increased by 30 percent in rupee terms as the value of rupee had declined against the dollar. The export of Ribbon fish decreased from 16,400 tonnes to 3,400 tonnes. The exports of all varieties of fish declined by 45 percent in the first 4 months of 1998-99. China imported 18,000 tonnes (19,800 tonnes) of seafood. The payments have not been made for the imports so far and exporters want an official delegation sent to that country for discussing the matter with the authorities. Chinese importers are due Rs28 crore for the exports made by four exporters of India. Exports to Japan also reduced to 18,000 tonnes (19,800 tonnes). Exports to United States increased to 10,500 tonnes (6,600 tonnes). The demand from south-east Asian countries have declined due to the currency crisis. (rk)

SEAFOOD EXPORTS MAY DECLINE BY 5% THIS FISCAL

Article Abstract:

Seafood Exporters Association has predicted that the exports of marine products from India is likely to drop by five percent during 1998-99. For 1998-99, the industry has targeted 20 percent growth in exports. The drop in exports is due to decline in exports to China. India exports Rs700 crore worth seafood products to China. In 1997-98, India had exported seafood worth $1,300 million. (gs)(vr)
