American academic is among those fined for article in IHT

Article Abstract:

The Singapore High Court recently ruled against the defendants in a widely-publicized trial arising from an article published in the International Herald Tribune. In his ruling, Justice Goh Joon Seng found the five defendants, all newspaper officials, in contempt of court and ordered them to pay heavy fines for their offense. The author of the article, US professor Christopher Lingle, had made references to compliant judiciaries and intolerant Asian regimes. The defendants denied that the article was about Singapore but the court rejected their arguments and ruled that it clearly referred to Singapore.
