DOWNSTREAM COS SPLIT ON HR PRICES

Article Abstract:

Downstream users of hot rolled (HR) coils such as galvanisers, pipe makers and cold rolled (CR) coil manufacturers are divided over the issue of fixation of minimum import price for HR coils. HR coils is a basic input for all downstream products. The floor price of HR coils was fixed at $302 a tonne in December 1998. Domestic cold rollers feel that the floor price for HRC is high compared with HR coils imported from CIS nations at $180-200 per tonne. Following the fixation of floor price, domestic HR coil manufacturers have hiked the price of their product by Rs1,000 a tonne. Domestic CR coil manufacturers fell they will be priced out because of the higher input cost of HR coils. (uh)(vr)

SAIL OFFERS SABBATICAL SCHEME FOR STAFF TO SHED FLAB

Article Abstract:

Steel Authority of India Ltd has come out with a sabbatical scheme to reduce its workforce, which will permit employees with more than 10 years of service to take leave for one to three years while keeping their jobs secure. Those who opt for the scheme will get certain benefits but their basic salary will not be paid for the leave period. They can retain their company accommodation, undergo medical treatment and get even gratuity. They can get employed in the private sector but not in other public sector undertakings during the leave period. (khr)
