Saddam Hussein's air defences were provoking the US in Iraq's no-fly zone while the Kurdish faction he support, the Kurdistan Democratic Party was conquering rivals in Arbil and Sulaymaniyah. Iraq's Arab neighbors object both to US raids and Turkish intervention in northern Iraq.

Promise of a Saddam surprise

Article Abstract:

The US is reportedly encouraging dissident forces in Iraq to overthrow Saddam Hussein, promising military assistance. Two volatile groups that may be involved are the Kurds and the Shiites. A better solution may be to force Hussein to follow international laws.

Surviving, with difficulty: Iraq's Kurds

Article Abstract:

Iraq's Kurds are attempting to develop their newly granted autonomy, and the long-rival Kurdish parties have even merged their guerrilla armies. Their main problem is an economic squeeze between a blockade from Baghdad and UN sanctions against all Iraq.
