Safer cities for women: perceived risks and planning measures

Article Abstract:

Surveys show that some two-thirds of women are afraid to use town centres at night for fear of attack and many are worried about public transport and car parks. Those responsible for land-use and transport should consider women's safety when planning city centres, transport services and residential areas. No national policy exists for safety planning in the UK but several local initiatives are underway, including protected travel schemes.
