Sakura Bank looks to affiliates for help

Article Abstract:

Sakura Bank Ltd. has responded to it's weakening financial situation with a plea to it's largest share holders to help rescue the company by agreeing to an emergency capital infusion of $2 billion dollars. Sakura says the new capital will help the bank respond to the challenges of deregulation, but many analysts believe the is little more than a short term solution to the banks many problems.

Sony unveils broad restructuring plan; trimming plans are music to investors' ears

Article Abstract:

Consumer electronics company Sony Corp. has revealed a plan to remain proiftable in the face of price wars and increasing competition. The strategy includes a reduction in manufacturing plants from 70 to 55, a reorganization of core businesses, and a reduction in the labor force of 10%(17,000 jobs). The new business plan helped to boost Sony's stock price.

Big manufacturers in Japan disclose growing optimism

This article discusses the survey conducted by the Bank of Japan. The bank discovered that major manufacturers, companies with at least 1,000 workers, are optimistic about the Japanese economy. This may lead the bank to raise interest rates.
