Santander net profit jumps 54%

Second-quarter net profit for Spain's Banco Santander S.A. rose by 54% to reach $3.65 bil, due in part to capital gains connected to the selling of a stake in Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. Net interest income increased by 26%, with lending volumes up 16%.

RBS to extend reach in China with deal for 19.9% trust stake

Royal Bank of Scotland PLC intends to purchase a 19.9% stake in Chinese financial firm Suzhou Trust Co., a move that would enable RBS to expand its wealth management services into China's financial markets. Terms and value of the deal are not known.

Spain's BBVA enters China
